Firstly you need to think about what you want to get out of your Blu ray player. Is being able to connect to the internet and having access to bonus content of great importance to you or is it predominantly the audio and image quality?

Sony has a wide range of Bluray players available including the Sony BDP S300, BDP S350 and BDP S550. These players can offer you a wide range of features with an affordable price tag. As you would expect from Sony, these players will all provide you with a clear, crisp picture and fantastic audio. They also utilize Sony's XrossMediaBar interface and sync up with all BRAVIA kit and the BDP S350 and BDP S550 are both Profile 2.0 players so can take full advantage of BD-Live online. The Sony BDP-S5000ES is perhaps one of the most expensive Blu-ray players on the market but provides you with an amazing picture and sound, fantastic DVD upscaling and 7.1-channel analogue audio. Also in their product line is the BDP-S500.

The superb Samsung range of Blu ray players have been specifically designed to compliment their range of TV’s and provide all the style that you would expect from this manufacturer. The BDP 1500 and BDP 2500 both provide an easily affordable player that will give you the perfect home cinema experience with quality audio and images. Also in this range are the BDP 1400 and the BDP 1000.

Pioneer have also been hard at work and developed a range of Blu ray players that are sure to please. The BDP 51FD, BDP LX71 and BDP LX08 all offer superb picture and sound performance but do lack the all important BD Live so would not be suitable if this is something you are looking for. Don’t let this put you off though as these are well designed and great quality Blu ray players.

The Panasonic DMP BD55 and DMP BD35 are also up there with the top Blu ray players to buy. These players will show you exactly how a good High Definition player should be. Both players are slim and stylish and support BD Live. They also benefit greatly from the inclusion of Panasonic's PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus to give you a fantastic picture.

Other good makes that are worth considering are Sharp, Denon and Philips. The Denon range includes the DVD 1800BD and DVD 2500BT. Both are smart and well designed with impressive picture and audio features. However the DVD 2500BT is a little different as it provides Blu ray transport to reduce interference. One of the best in the Sharp range is the BD HP20H which provides a great picture and is well designed and easy to use. There are also the BD HP21H and the BD HP20S which are similarly good players. The Philips BDP 7200 has a completely different look to many Blu ray players on the market and is sure to appeal with its modern rounded corners. It does however come with a slightly limited number of features but again, provides a great image.
